Osseous Surgery – Sugar Land, Tx
Osseous surgery, sometimes referred to as pocket reduction surgery or gingivectomy, refers to a number of different surgeries aimed at gaining access to the tooth roots to remove tartar and disease-causing bacteria.
Goals of Osseous Surgery
Osseous surgery is used to reshape deformities and remove pockets in the alveolar bone surrounding the teeth. It is a common necessity in effective treatment of more advanced periodontal diseases. The ultimate goal of osseous surgery is to reduce or eliminate the periodontal pockets that cause periodontal disease. Despite the word “surgery” the procedure is reported to feel more like a thorough cleaning. The specific goals of surgery include:
- Reducing Bacterial Spread:
Bacteria from the mouth can spread throughout the body and cause other life-threatening conditions such as heart disease and respiratory disease. Removing deep tartar and thereby bacteria can help reduce the risk of bacteria spreading. - Preventing Bone Loss:
The immune system’s inflammatory response prompted by periodontal bacteria can lead to bone loss in the jaw region, and cause teeth to fall out. Osseous surgery seeks to stop periodontal disease before it progresses to this level. - Enhancing the Smile:
Mouths plagued with periodontal disease are often unsightly. Brown gums, rotting teeth, and ridge indentations can leave a person feeling depressed and too self-conscious to smile. Fortunately, osseous surgery can help reduce bacteria and disease and thereby restore your mouth to its former radiance, while restoring confidence at the same time. - Facilitating Home Care:
As the gum pocket deepens, it can become nearly impossible to brush and floss adequately. Osseous surgery reduces pocket size, making it easier to brush and floss, and thereby prevent further periodontal disease.
What does the procedure entail?
A local anesthetic will be used to numb the area prior to surgery. First, Dr. Condrey will cut around each tooth of the affected area to release the gum tissue from the bone. This allows access to the bone and roots of the teeth. After the roots have been thoroughly cleaned through scaling, a drill and hand tools will be used to reshape the bone around the teeth. Bone is removed in some areas to restore the normal rise and fall of the bone, but at a lower level. Bone grafting may also be necessary to fill in large defects.
Next, the gums will be placed back over the remaining bone and suture them in place. The site will also be covered with a bandage (periodontal pack) or dressing. Pain medicine and mouth rinses containing chlorhexidine are generally prescribed following the surgery.
Do not be alarmed if bleeding and swelling occur after the surgery. This can be controlled easily by placing an ice pack on the outside of the affected area. In cases where the bleeding and swelling is in excess, it is advised that you call to notify our office. Several follow up visits may be necessary and you must fulfill a meticulous maintenance program especially during the initial phases of healing to avoid post-operative infection.

Dr. Condrey and his staff are caring, pleasant and professional. I had a molar extracted in preparation for implant. I was informed by Dr. Condrey throughout the procedure and both he and his associate were concerned that my comfort was foremost. Best of all, no swelling and only two ibuprofen for very minimal discomfort!

Dr. Condrey is as professional as he is personable. He quickly resolved a chronic abscess problem that had baffled several other practitioners. Believe me that absence of abscess makes my heart grow fonder (and healthier). He also has impeccable taste in his office and staff selections. The facility is open and airy, plus it is filled with such beautiful furnishings and artwork that it resembles a mini-museum. His staff is as attentive as they are attractive. These combined elements provide a relaxing and pleasurable experience for patients receiving competent care for complex problems provided in a truly wonderfully soothing environment.

I have been a patient for over 10 years with Dr Condrey. Not my first periodontist, but definitely the best one. Staff is friendly and most capable at the jobs they do. Used to always request nitrous for routine cleanings, but Andrea has such a good touch and technique that nitrous is not needed for the sensitive gums.

First of all I'm infamous for my dental phobias so let that be the base. Dr. Condrey and his staff were totally professional, personable, and accommodating for my entire office experience. My service/ insurance procedure was seamless and most importantly I had full access to Dr. Condrey during and after business hours. You can't take that for granted. I would recommend him and his staff to all my friends and family and coming from someone who's a stickler for customer service and loyalty I wouldn't just say it if it wasn't so.

Dr. Condrey and all the staff were very personable, informative, kind and considerate. The office atmosphere is very welcoming as is Dr. Condrey and each one of his assistants at the front desk and in the procedure rooms. They were great at explaining the procedures as well as thoroughly answering any questions I had. Going to the dentist really isn't what I'd call a fun day, but Dr. Condrey and his staff made the experience easy and painless. They were all a pleasure to work with and I would certainly give the highest recommendations for anyone needing to see a periodontist. Whether you live in Sugar Land or anywhere in the surrounding areas, Dr. Condrey is the doctor to see.

I'm beginning the process for my first dental implant. You can therefore understand how apprehensive I was initially. I feel extremely comfortable and at ease with Dr. Condrey and his team since they have taken the time to explain the implant procedure to me. Importantly, in the interim, they have been very responsive to questions related to my care. My spouse first received dental care from Dr. Condrey and his staff. They are well regarded, and I concur.

Dr. Condrey and his staff are most competent professionals I have come across. I have been seeing this doctor now for about a year . I have my regular cleanings every three month, and a one time "deep cleaning". His dental hygienist is really meticulous about her work and does an excellent work. I see Dr. Condrey at least every other time I go to have my quarterly cleaning, to check on the progress of my gums that so far are improving a lot. He is very thorough in his check ups and always give me an explanation of the condition of my gums and what I should do to take care of them and my teeth. Very satisfied to be his patient! I give this office a rating of 5 Stars!
